CHANGE OF DATE: Come and hear the amazing story of the mammalian placenta at Maclaurin Chapel

The mammalian placenta provides sustenance for the developing foetus, and is (in evolutionary terms) a recent innovation. Remarkably, some of its special features have arisen from functions provided by the random activities of retroviruses and ‘jumping genes’ that accumulated haphazardly in the genomes of our ancestors. But the placenta is much more than flexible plumbing: parenting starts in utero, and placental function provides a basis for lifelong physical and mental health.
