Early Life and Education
Va’alotu Solofa was born on September 22, 1950, in the village of Magiagi,
Vaimauga, Samoa. Raised in a family that valued Christian values,
Education and Community Service, Va’alotu showed an early interest in
Science and Technology. He attended Samoa College, where he studied
English, Mathematics, Geography and Science. He worked as Public
Servant for (3) three years and left for New Zealand in 1973. He initially
worked as a Factory Worker for (6) months before he was employed by one
of the major Banks.
Academic Achievements
Enrolled at the University of Otago in 1975. Began training to become a
Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand in 1978.
Worked as a Hospital Chaplain at the Dunedin Hospital (June 1980-April
1982). Married on 9 February 1980 and began our Parish Ministry on 19
April 1982 at the border of Otago and Southland.
Career Beginnings
Graduated (BA) Batchelor of Arts in 1979 (Otago), and (Dip.Min) of
Ministry in 1981 (Theological Hall, Knox College). Served (20) twenty
years in the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand (3 parishes);
accepted a ‘Call’ from across the Tasman (June 2000) and finally retired 31
December 2022.
I started working (when needed) for the Ministry of Internal Affairs (as a
Samoan Interpreter/Translator) in 1992. In Australia, I was registered as
an Interpreter/Translator in 2005, a registration which is still valid as of
today.
Community Engagement
Va’alotu continues to serve as Interim Minister for two Vacant Parishes.
Still actively involved in various Community initiatives. He volunteers at
local schools, mentoring students and encouraging them to pursue careers
that interest them.
Personal Life and Interests
Va’alotu remains deeply connected to his roots in Craigieburn. Since his
wife died a year ago, he continues to spend time with his grandchildren,
children, families and friends, sometimes enjoying camping and hiking
with children and grandchildren, and participating in local cultural events.
An enthusiastic classical music collector, a good reader, he has a personal
music library as well as several books, ranging from classic literature to the
latest in theological scholarship and scientific research.
Hobbies and Passions
Va’alotu is a passionate advocate for environmental conservation. He
actively supports various environmental organizations and participates in
initiatives aimed at preserving natural habitats and promoting sustainable
practices. His love for nature is evident in his efforts to balance
technological advancement with ecological responsibility.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Va’alotu aims to continue encouraging individuals to value
themselves, acknowledge what they have as a God given gift, and perusing
such gift for the benefit of oneself and others.
