Unified Knowledge: A Conversation on Faith, Science & the Barriers Between

Dr. Nicola Hoggard Creegan reflects with Rev. A/Prof. Doru Costache on an upcoming essay exploring why science and theology struggle to connect. From Karl Barth’s influence to cultural resistance in both church and science, she calls for a more integrated pursuit of truth.

A conversation with Dr Nicola Hoggard Creegan, taking as a pretext a conference paper which Nicola turned into an essay to be published in the ISCAST journal, Christian Perspectives on Science and Technology. Nicola begins by summarising the article, which explores the factors leading to a relative lack of success of the academic field of science & theology. Among other gems, Nicola tackles briefly one of the obstacles encountered by science & theology, namely, the influence of a consequential theologian of last century, Karl Barth, who excluded nature (thus also the natural sciences) as a source for theological reflection. The discussion unfolds by addressing parts of the article, such as the resistance of church leaders and regular believers to any things scientific; the resistance of scientifically minded people to other forms of knowing; the usefulness of engaging the sciences by Christians who seek the truth; the quest for unified knowledge, especially knowledge that enriches our experience in the here and now.
